We all have items in our closet that we look at and think: maybe I’ll wear it this season. But more often than not, we wear only 20% of our clothes 80% of the time! The usual complaint of ‘having nothing to wear’ is not really an honest indication of what’s not in your wardrobe; most of us do have a wide array of clothing to choose from but maybe it’s not the right shape, or colour for the current fashion trends. Our solution? Bring back that tried and trusted concept of the Capsule Wardrobe; with just a few key pieces, you can energize your wardrobe and feel great and on-trend every day!
The ‘Capsule Wardrobe’ was conceptualised by a London boutique owner; Susie Faux, who understood that streamlining your wardrobe with quality pieces and then adding lashings of the season’s hottest colours were ideal for any kind of woman, especially one that didn’t have time to dilly dally in front of her closet every morning. According to Faux, the perfect capsule wardrobe must consist of: two pairs of trousers, a dress or skirt, a jacket, a coat, a knit, two pairs of shoes and two bags. These were the key or ‘staple’ items every wardrobe should have – all of a very high quality, as they will obviously be worn on most days. Add in seasonal pieces in accent colours and you’ve got yourself the perfect wardrobe.
The concept was further popularised by A-List designer Donna Karan, who created a stir in 1985 with her clever ‘Influential Capsule Collection’ consisting of seven interchangeable workwear pieces. On the runway, models walked with nothing but body suits and black tights, each time adding accent items to demonstrate the versatility of the collection and the “interchangeability” of the capsule concept. The idea has endured for not only the obvious genius simplicity and time-saving aspect of it but also because it allows you to look good on a small budget!
We are into Spring/Summer 2013 now and driving around the sunshine-pelted, flower-endowed, buzzing-beed avenues on our way to the mall, it’s obvious the colours of this season get their inspiration from nature; picture a beach scene: delicious candy floss pinks, soft sandy caramels, sky blues, romantic pastels, sage green grasses and navy striped sexiness all a-frolicking in beautiful spring weather. Goodbye heavy, moody darks of winter; hello periwinkle!
Want in on the fun? In three easy steps we’re going to show you how to energize and create your own capsule wardrobe:
Step 1: Try to choose base items that are made with high quality fabrics in classic shapes and patterns. Also, these base items must complement your body shape. Your bottom items i.e. trousers/shorts/jeans should be the right fit and length – there’s no use buying skinny fit if your body shape doesn’t suit it. Ditto with the dress/skirt – if you are short, buying over the knee will elongate your legs and make you look slimmer.
Step 2: Choose a base colour scheme to begin with based on your skintone: Spring staple: Dove Grey, Camel and Creams if you have warm tone, Charcoal, Navy and White if you have cool tone . Build your shell outfits such as dress/trousers/skirt/short in these colours.
Step 3: Choose a few brighter ‘accent’ colours that in turn, all complement each other as well. For this Spring/Summer 2013, pastels that compliment your eyes, complexion and hair colour, would work great with your base colours. These bright accents should be on your tops, statement pieces, scarves, shoes, bags and accessories.
This season doesn’t just stop at pastels; why not try a monochrome theme? Dig in your closet for that beautiful white shirt you bought a few years ago. Pair it with basic base items and go wild with colour on everything else! Or be minimalist if you like – straight, sporty cuts paired with bold block colours will make you feel young and on-trend all the time!
The brilliant concept of the capsule wardrobe also allows you to dress for many occasions in one day; working late and need to rush to a dinner meeting? Wear your favourite LBD with a pair of comfy print flats for the day and pack a pair of jewelled heels, a little metallic lipstick bag and a bold-coloured designer scarf, and you can easily turn classy feminine boardroom into casual glam in minutes. As long as your accent colours and patterns are the season’s hottest, you’ll never go wrong with your well-organised, relevant and clutter-free capsule wardrobe.
